Ah, the great outdoors. Or as we like to think of it, a bonus room with really, really great natural lighting. While some may say the beauty of an outdoor space is in something obvious, like the trees, at Article we say its in having the perfect spot to do all your favorite inside things, outside. Well, the trees are cool too.

So, how can you achieve your perfect space? With Article’s modern outdoor furniture, of course. But first, a little planning. Every outdoor space has its own unique characteristics to consider before styling. For example, if you can see the space clearly from one of your indoor rooms, bringing in similar colors and textures is a great way to make your patio, deck or balcony feel like a natural continuation of your interior design. Next, decide how youd like to use it. Are you looking to do some casual entertaining, host family cookouts, or just sit back and take a moment for yourself? No matter how you plan on enjoying the outdoors, choosing the right modern patio furniture is the key to making your space work for you.

Fabric Midcentury Modern Patio Furniture

If your dream weekend involves a couch and some sun, look no further than an outdoor sofa. Usually, they are made of a blend of wood or powder-coated steel with fabric cushions. Midcentury modern outdoor couches offer an incredible level of style without sacrificing comfort. Certain treated fabrics mean that these comfy couches can hang outside all day, all year.

Cant Decide Have It All

The beautiful thing about midcentury modern is its ability to blend materials that would otherwise not go together. Matching steel-framed chairs next to a gorgeous wooden table and some brightly colored cushions can provide you with an industrial, woodsy feel. Or you could choose to bring together clean, white chairs made of plastic and soft cushions to make sitting a pleasure. Whatever you may decide, always follow your style. Midcentury modern will give you all the options you could want and help you in the creation of your perfect outdoor space.

Sling & Butterfly Chairs

Sling chairs offer a classic retro beach vibe, while butterfly chairs are one of the earliest modernist chair designs. The original butterfly chair was created by three Buenos Aires-based architects, Antonio Bonet, Juan Kurchan, and Jorge Ferrari-Hardoy, who met while working at Le Corbusiers studio. In 1940 after the chair was exhibited in Argentina, a design curator at MoMA Edgar Kaufmann Jr. exported two to the US: one for MOMA, and the other for his family home, Fallingwater. Knoll began producing them in the US, and about 5 million chairs were sold during the 1950s alone.

Midcentury Modern: What Is It

Mid

Like any era of design, midcentury modern has evolved. There was a fusion of geometric shapes and straight lines, but the style didnt fully take form until the 1940s. At the time, America was all about embracing the future. Space exploration, nuclear physics, molecular chemistry, and a growing interest in science fiction played a major part in the development of this futuristic style.

Pop culture and current events werent the only factors impacting midcentury modern designs development. Materials played a huge role, too. Plywood, metal, glass, vinyl, plexiglass, and Lucite all made their appearance in the furnishings of this era. Unlike how plastic is used to resemble wood or other materials today, in midcentury modern pieces, it was used for its own abilities.

To sum it up, the most distinguishing features of midcentury modern include:

Richard Schultz Patio Furniture

Aaron Mapp / 1stDibs.com

Richard Schultz started designing for Knoll Furniture in 1951. He began by assisting Harry Bertoia on his Wire Collection as an indoor/outdoor line of home furnishings .

Schultz first explored the idea of his own innovative outdoor lines in the early to mid-1960s. His Petal Table, available in three versions, was an award-winning hit that came out in 1960. To compliment Bertoia’s designs, his 715 Chaise Lounge was made in 1961. This piece is now a part of the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection.

He also introduced a collection of aluminum furniture in 1966, at the urging of Florence Knoll, that was durable yet sophisticated. The 1966 Collection includes a grouping of lounge furniture as well as dining furniture with several chair and table options.

John Salterini’s Wrought Iron Furniture

Cannes Outdoor Reclining Lounge Chair | Mid Century Modern Furniture

Sixteen Fifty Nine / 1stDibs

The John B. Salterini Company of New York, New York marketed a line of furniture known as NEVA-RUST to mid-century consumers. Many see these lines as the first wave of wrought iron outdoor furniture since those popular during the Victorian era. This includes a number of pieces that appeal to those seeking modernist furniture for outdoor settings.

Among the most popular with today’s decorators is the Salterini hoop chair designed by Maurizio Tempestini. These are also referenced as “radar chairs” or “clamshell chairs” due to their unique round shape. They coordinate with round tables made of similar materials for dining, but look great as occasional chairs either for indoor or outdoor use.

In fact, Salterini pieces were widely advertised in home decorating magazines from the 1940s through the ’70s for use both indoors and out, especially dining sets. Those seeking Salterini designs today should be aware that many pieces marketed as being made by this brand are actually more recent imported knock offs.

Brown Jordan’s Acclaimed Outdoor Furnishings

The Exchange Int. / 1stDibs

Founded by Robert Brown and Hubert Jordan in Pasadena, California in 1945, Brown Jordan is a name associated with quality patio furniture. Their lines are currently used by a number of well-known hotels, resorts and residences including Wynn properties, a number of Four Seasons resorts around the world, and even the White House in Washington, DC.

When it comes to Brown Jordan’s mid-century vintage pieces sought by collectors, a number were designed by Walter Lamb. The prototypes for these pieces were made with salvaged bronze piping bent into curving shapes and finished with yacht cord webbing. It is not uncommon for the cording to be reworked on these vintage chaise loungers and rocking chairs.

Other Brown Jordan lines, such as the Elan Collection dating to the 1980s, featured oversized disc wheels on chaise lounges similar to those designed by Richard Schwartz for his 1966 Collection. Designer Richard Frinier also designed a bar cart for Brown Jordan in the 1980s with large wheels of this type.

Wooden Midcentury Modern Patio Furniture

Wooden patio furniture is sturdy, long-lasting, and often feels the most like having real furniture outside. It can also be expensive. Dense-grained tropical hardwood, such as teak, can resist warping and swelling, which is important. You can also opt for cheaper wood and throw on a cover for protection.

Other popular woods used in midcentury modern patio furniture are cedar, pine, and eucalyptus. Just know that wood furniture often requires staining and oil to maintain its original appearance. With a little bit of care, your outdoor wooden pieces will stay fresh for years to come.
